Soothing Swedish Home with a Striking Dark Floor

Why, hello there! The Scandinavian school summer holidays start in a mere 6 weeks - eeeeek! How did that happen?  The thing is, my mind seems to think the long, gloriously slow days of summer have already arrived (it doesn't help that it's one of those diamond days with clear blue skies and the promise of an Aperol Spritz in the sunshine!). As a result I just don't seem to be getting anything done (do you ever feel like this too?!). This is where a maximalist home in a riot of colours might help jolt me back to reality. But nope, this soothing grey, white and neutral Swedish home fits my vibe in every way. I especially love the striking dark wood floor against the whites and pale greys. Come and dream with me (and perhaps pick up some ideas on the way!).

Going for a bolder colour in the bedroom is a fail safe way of injecting stronger tones into a home without going all out (and what a pretty colour it is too?!). I like how they've placed similar colours in the adjoining room (like the grey cabinet and rug) which help to create a cohesive look. 

The sitting room area is fairly awkward shape and yet the owners (designers?) have carved out a clever multipurpose space with a desk, social area and place to watch TV. I like the way the armchair (by Tine K Home) has been turned towards the sofa, taking the main focus away from the TV!

Rust, powder pink and amber accents are one of the key colour combinations of 2018 - I'm so happy about this I think there's something beautiful about these tones combined. The Poster Club sells similar abstract art and oak frames and you can pick up a pretty mustard throw here.

How clever is this little work space made up of a simple wall mounted desk and open shelving? The black chair is the Afteroom by Menu. Love how they've even added some greenery (perhaps they've been reading my lagom book?!).

The blue-grey hue in the bedroom creates an unbelievably calm feel. The hanging plant in the corner  (source a similar macrame planter here) adds some much needed height (an important thing to think about from a styling point of view - especially if you have high ceilings!). 

Look at all that natural light?!  Once again the dark wood floor adds a perfect amount of contrast to what is otherwise a very neutral space.

Plants such as the fig tree and Rex Begonia seen on the balcony work equally well indoors or outdoors. In fact, I have a Rex Begonia in my office and they're practically impossible to kill (we like!). In fact they LOVE to dry out (and then you drench them before letting them dry out again - AKA my usual plant care routine!). Is it possible to have a plant as a best friend?!

Cheesy Baked Pasta

Hello Dear Reader,

Mmmm, Pasta, Cheese, Basil, Tomato and more Cheese! What a fabulous combination, delicious and easy to make and bake and a delight to eat. It makes a huge quantity also, so if you are expecting a crowd for dinner this would be ideal. It reheats beautifully and is abundantly filling and warming. Gosh I do go on don't I? It's just so delicious. I have used orecchiette pasta, as it is a small but robust pasta, like little cups, perfect to fill up with the simple tomato sauce.

Ingredients for Cheesy Bake Pasta, clockwise from top right-

3 x 400 gram cans of diced tomatoes, 3 cups grated mozzarella plus 1&1/2 cups grated parmesan, mixed together, 1 x 375 gram container of ricotta (I used the Aldi brand), 2 cloves of garlic, grated on a microplane, 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried chilli flakes, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, a good handful of basil, roughly chopped, 1 x 500 gram packet of small pasta of choice, salt and pepper to taste, 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar plus 2 tablespoons of olive oil (not pictured)

Firstly, cook pasta in the usual way and set aside until needed, keeping back 1 cup of the cooking liquid. Preheat oven to 200 C

In a bowl, mix in the 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the ricotta and season well with salt and pepper, set aside until needed

In a large saucepan, heat a little oil on medium heat and sauté the garlic and chilli for about 1 minute or until fragrant 

Now add the cans of diced tomatoes, brown sugar and balsamic vinegar, bring to a gentle simmer and let blip away for 15 minutes or so to reduce

Now add the cooked pasta and reserved pasta cooking water, it will look a little watery at this stage but it will be just perfect by the end of baking

Roughly chop the basil

In a large greased casserole dish, ladle in half the pasta and sauce mixture, top with ricotta mixture and half the chopped basil

Now ladle over the other half of the pasta and sauce

Sprinkle over the combined grated cheeses and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden and bubbly

Once finished baking, sprinkle over other half of chopped basil and maybe another grating of parmesan when serving. I served ours with some lovely sautéed silverbeet.

Full of flavour and filling enough even for the meat-a-saurasus’s in your family.

Two Years Ago-Stay Home=Get Stuff Done

This is another sterling recipe from Mel over at "Mels Kitchen Cafe" as always I have tinkered with the original recipe, adding, subtracting and converting the quantities and ingredients of the original recipe

Garden Update

This post will be a bit long.  I tried to take some pictures of all of the main areas.  We are working to plant fruit trees around the yard but that is a work in progress right now.  This covers the main garden which consists of raised beds.  It is easier to cover those to keep the chickens (and now Toby) from digging.

The raspberry plants have grown and spread this year.  After having so many of them crushed last year by the pecan limbs, I am hoping for a good harvest this year.

I had some chamomile sprout from seeds that dropped last year.  It came up sporadically so I tossed out some more seeds over the weekend.

I had two eggplants sprout back out from last year.  I was really surprised since it was colder than normal plus we got snow.  They are small but will provide me with a later harvest.

This is one of my new beds.  I had very little luck starting seeds inside this year.  I only ended up with two tomato plants which are in the back left corner.  The other plants were given to me.  I have several tomatoes, eggplant, and a few peppers.

I decided to plant some seeds directly into the soil.  I have a long growing season so this is not a problem.  I have piles and piles of small tomato and pepper seedlings.

The bee balm gets a bit bigger each year.  This bed is one of the oldest.  I expect by next year to just do away with the boards and let the bee balm grow.

These onion plants grew from the bottoms of green onions purchased from the grocery store.  I am hoping they will drop their seeds mostly inside the bed so I can get some more onions.

One of the beds we plan to do away with this year is full of marigold plants.  I have been giving them away but have not made much of a dent at all.

My new herb beds which I absolutely love.  I moved some plants which look a bit sad but are doing better now.  I love the set up and am excited for them to fill in.  Having fresh herbs in the garden for cooking is wonderful!

My purple potatoes have grown well.  They are getting higher than the containers so we added wire and have been filling them with hay.

My bay tree is putting on new growth. 

Once we get the loquat trees (on the left) planted, I can plant the kiwi plants.  They are growing well and seem to like the area where we set them.  I think that is where we will plant them. 

I went through all of my old seeds (3-4 years old).  I decided to just plant them all and see what comes up.  I have two containers with tomato and pepper seeds.  I planted the pumpkin seeds in the compost pile.  I planted herb seeds in marked containers.  Time will tell what if anything sprouts.

This neutral covered terrace has been kept beautifully simple. To achieve a similar look, paint the wood decking white (using materials suitable for the outdoors) and keep to simple light wicker chairs (the hanging rattan bench* is divine!), lanterns and matting. Large tropical plants such as Bamboo, Bird of Paradise, Hardy Banana and Needle Palm will withstand colder climes and will bring a little touch of Paradise to your outdoor space (even on the gloomiest of days)!

Aaaa, I feel relaxed just looking at these spaces, how about you? Although they all look like they are in warmer climes (bah!), don't be put off! Just add wicker chairs and rugs specifically designed for the great outdoors (I have my eye on the Pottery Barn Solange rug below), candlelight and plenty of textiles. Oh and perhaps an awning to keep the rain at bay!

The Holy One, Blessed is He, King of the Kings of the Holy One, Blessed be He, leads the world in the good and just way for our own good, in favor of the Creator and the repair of this world. The Holy One, Blessed be He, is good and does good, and does only good. 

Through agony and difficult things, straightening the world and bringing him to the path of truth and integrity, to complete his correction. The Holy One, Blessed is He, has a way of bringing the world to an end, and the end of death, that the Jewish people will live forever! There will be no more wars, there will be no killing, no sickness, no suffering, there will be the Messiah and the Temple, the resurrection of the dead, a new and good life and all working together. We are at the end of the end, ending all the summits and ending the puzzle.

All natural disasters in the world, outside the borders of the Land of Israel - (are) the hand of God. Within the Land of Israel there are no natural disasters, there are human errors. All earthquakes, floods, harsh winds, storms, dust, fires, volcano eruptions, accidents in planes, ships, trains and cars, and conflicts between states, all of which are the hand of God. Jews who live in the Land of Israel must protect themselves "and you are very careful for your souls," so that a person will not say to me, 'This will not happen.’

We came to this world, to work and do God's Will. One has to thank God every morning. A Jew who wants to succeed must first have all the knowledge of good. If a Jew skips his gratitude, he will no longer have good, he will deal with evil. We must not forget the gratitude, so the people of Israel have prayers and we thank the Creator day by day for the good he gives us. Free choice by man, to choose good or to choose evil, or to suddenly turn from good to evil - he chooses.

The whole world is in a great shock from all natural disasters. All this is done by the Holy One, Blessed is He, who wants to return to Him submissively. Submission is humility, the opposite of pride. A person who knows and is happy in good and evil is called submissive and humble. When a person lacks nothing, he forgets the Holy One, Blessed be He, and thinks that everything is His.

The Holy One, Blessed is He, takes righteous Jews from the world to save and protect the Holy Land of Israel and the Jews who live in the Holy Land of Israel. The Holy One, Blessed be He, wants the people of Israel to be united and undivided.

Most accidents and disasters that happen to man are man's choice, "and you are to be very careful for your souls"! Should be responsible for your body and your families.

The Creator of the Universe warns all nations of the world not to mess with or disturb the Holy Land and Jews living in the Holy Land of Israel. Anyone who disturbs and oppresses will receive the ten plagues of Egypt a hundredfold. Anyone who supports Israel will be Blessed by the Supreme One.

Derech Eretz Kedma to Torah, "Love thy neighbor as thyself" is the whole Torah.

No country in the world, and no one can harm, harass or destroy the land of Israel and the Jews who live in the Land of Israel. Although there is a great deal of anti-Semitism, envy and narrow-mindedness, this is baseless hatred. The Holy One, Blessed be He, is with the people of Israel, a cloud of fire enveloping the borders of the Land of Israel. 

The Holy Land will remain forever. From which the entire world (benefits) lives, (and) from the Jews who live in the holy land of Israel, from (their) prayers, Torah study and technology! Those who fight against the State of Israel, the Holy Land, and the Jews who live in the Holy Land are fighting against the Holy One, Blessed is He, and there is no one who will defeat the Holy One, Blessed is He.

Iran can threaten as much as it wants. The Holy One, Blessed be He, casts upon her terror and fear, trembling and trembling, and natural disasters. If it is not enough and does not understand, the plagues will multiply by a hundredfold.

If they do not, they will be […] and natural disasters, infiltrators and refugees will come, turn Europe into Islam and hurt the Jews very badly. Even now they hurt the Jews and they think it will pass. The Creator says to the Jews: 'It will not pass.: When you understand that you have to leave Europe and the United States and come to live in the Holy Land, you will receive hints from all directions that you are not welcome there, and you are fighting against the Creator to stay abroad. You have to come to live in the holy Land of Israel, to settle the Negev, the Western Galilee, the Golan Heights, Samaria, Binyamin, the Judean Desert, the Arava and the Jordan Valley. Why wait?! Life is worth billions of dollars! ‘

Turkey, Erdogan ends up (erasing) anyone who interferes and opposes his regime. Nothing would help him. The Holy One, Blessed is He, gave him time to do Teshuvah, and now the Teshuva is over. The Holy One, Blessed be He, has waited for him for a long time and will now begin to receive the serious blows.

Hizbullah and Nasrallah are waiting for arms and ammunition in 2018. The IDF sees and bombs everything, and the Holy One, Blessed be He, opens his eyes to the IDF. The Israel Defense Forces is guided directly from the Holy One, blessed be He. The IDF belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He, these are the armies of God.

Abu Mazen does not want peace, he wants to be admired by Muslims. Whatever the US offers, he says "no." If he agrees to the US - that day they will kill him.

The leaders of Hamas and Abu Mazen are taking all the money into their pockets, tens of millions of dollars and all the Palestinians are hungry. Hamas rents them for pennies and deceives them to do bad deeds against Israel. Hamas cheats and lies to them and they live in the imagination that Hamas is their idol.

Hamas the seed of Amalek continues with the tunnels.

Da'esh gives no rest, neither to the Gaza Strip nor to Egypt.

Egypt, Egypt's President Sisi will continue to fight with Da'esh, so that they will not reach Egypt ... Sisi is a wise and intelligent man, a good man who wants peace in the world and wants to promote Egypt to be modern. 

North Korea and South Korea are making peace. Kim knows that if he does not make peace, will not make peace, North Korea will be destroyed, he knows that all the countries of the world have united against him and Korea will disappear, Kim realized that he is dealing with the United States and that his time will be harmed. He took a new direction for peace with the South and with the whole world. Let this peace continue. 

Israel must continue to deport the infiltrators and the refugees legally. 

Mothers and parents all over the country - keep your daughters from assimilating. They must not assimilate. Israel haters have a new method of […] drugs for free and drinks for free to accustom the youth and […] there is no return. Are doing everything possible to decrease Jewish birth. They want to teach the youth gambling at the casino and to hurt the hearts of the Jewish people. The parents are guilty of everything. You have to educate them and not give them up. The Ministry of Education and schools need to educate and teach at least two hours every day what harm gambling, drugs, drinking and assimilation do. The Jews have kept themselves for thousands of years. Jews should be preserved and guarded by Judaism and the Jews among them. 

Dear Jews, buy houses in the Holy Land, the most elegant and Blessed Mitzva; to buy and build in the Holy Land, to settle the holy Land of Israel. This is God's Will. Do not wait to have fallen prices. Buy and buy and purchase - only in the Holy Land of Israel, do not stop! All of the investments that Jews invest in buying homes abroad, as if they will have a profit from it, will all be lost: One day will come, and everything will go down the drain

Our Messiah must be revealed, there is no time. If […] suddenly, in the meantime by degrees. Every Jew is waiting for our Messiah. All the people of Israel beg God to reveal King Messiah in public. In the year תש”ח,  of 70 years from 1948 the State of Israel, received the fourth foundation(?) of the four foundations(?) of the world, and every moment wait and wait for the Messiah to come out in public!

הקדוש-ברוך-הוא, מלך מלכי המלכים הקדוש-ברוך-הוא, מנהיג את העולם בדרך הטובה והנכונה לטובתנו בלבד, לטובת בורא עולם ולתיקון העולם הזה. הקדוש-ברוך-הוא טוב ומטיב ועושה רק טוב. דרך ייסורים ודברים לא קלים, מיישר את העולם ומביא אותו לדרך היושר והאמת, כדי להשלים את תיקונו. לקדוש-ברוך-הוא יש דרך להביא את העולם לסיום וקֵץ המוות, שבני האדם היהודים יחיו לחיי עולמים! לא יהיו עוד מלחמות, לא יהיה הרג, לא יהיו מחלות, לא ייסורים, יהיה משיח ובית המקדש, תחיית המתים, חיים חדשים וטובים וכולם עובדים שכם אחד את הקדוש-ברוך-הוא. אנחנו נמצאים בסוף של הסוף, קֵץ כל הקיצים לסיום התמונה ולהשלמת הפאזל.

אנחנו באנו לעולם הזה, לעבוד ולעשות את רצון ה'. אדם צריך להודות לקדוש-ברוך-הוא כל בוקר. יהודי שרוצה להצליח צריך שתהיה לו ראשית כל הכרת הטוב. אם יהודי מדלג על הכרת הטוב, לא יהיה לו עוד טוב, הוא יתמודד עם הרע. אסור לשכוח את הכרת הטוב, לכן יש לעם ישראל תפילות ואנחנו מודים לבורא עולם יום-יום על הטוב שנותן לנו. הבחירה החופשית בידי האדם, לבחור בטוב או לבחור ברע או פתאום להתהפך מטוב לרע - הוא בוחר.

כל העולם נמצא בזעזוע גדול מכל אסונות הטבע. את כל זה עושה הקדוש-ברוך-הוא כי רוצה שיַחזרו אליו כנועים. כניעה זו ענווה, ההפך מגאווה. אדם שמכיר ושמח בטוב וברע נקרא כנוע ועניו. כשלאדם לא חסר כלום, הוא שוכח את הקדוש-ברוך-הוא וחושב שהכל שלו.

הקדוש-ברוך-הוא לוקח צדיקים יהודים מן העולם, כדי לשמור ולהגן על ארץ ישראל הקדושה ועל היהודים שגרים בארץ ישראל הקדושה. הקדוש-ברוך-הוא רוצה שעם ישראל יהיו מלוכדים ומאוחדים.

רוב התאונות והאסונות שקורות לאדם, זו בחירתו של האדם, "ונשמרתם מאוד לנפשותיכם"! צריכים להיות אחראיים על הגוף שלכם ועל המשפחות שלכם.

בורא עולם מתרה בכל מדינות העולם: לא להתעסק ולא להפריע לארץ הקודש, לאדמת הקודש וליהודים שגרים בארץ ישראל. כל מי שיפריע ויציק, יקבל את עשר מכות מצרים פי-מאה. כל מי שיתמוך בישראל - יבורך מפי עליון.

דרך ארץ קדמה לתורה, "ואהבת לרעך כמוך" זו כל התורה.

אף מדינה בעולם ואף אדם לא יכולים לפגוע, להציק או להרוס לארץ ישראל וליהודים שגרים בארץ ישראל. למרות שיש הרבה נגד, שיש קנאה וצרות-עין, זו שנאת-חינם. הקדוש-ברוך-הוא נמצא עִם עַם ישראל, ענן אש עוטף את גבולות ארץ ישראל. ארץ הקודש תישאר לעולמים. ממנה חי כל העולם, מהיהודים שגרים בארץ ישראל הקדושה, מהתפילות, לימוד התורה והטכנולוגיה! מי שנלחם נגד מדינת ישראל, ארץ הקודש והיהודים שגרים בארץ הקודש - נלחם נגד הקדוש-ברוך-הוא ואין אדם שניצח את הקדוש-ברוך-הוא.

איראן יכולה לאיים כמה שהיא רוצה. הקדוש-ברוך-הוא מפיל עליה אֵימה ופחד, חלחלה ורעדה ואסונות טבע. אם זה לא מספיק ולא הבינה - המכות יוכפלו פי-מאה.

סוריה, הקדוש-ברוך-הוא כועס עליה על שפגעו והרגו חיילי צה"ל במלחמת יום כיפור. לא מוותר ולא סולח להם. הקדוש-ברוך-הוא נותן מכות קשות בסוריה, יש שם אסונות טבע, בוץ ושיטפונות, חוץ מהמלחמות ביניהם. כשהקדוש-ברוך-הוא כועס על מדינה או אדם שפגע בילדיו בארץ ישראל מדינת ישראל - לא עוזב עד שהורס אותם. טיפין טיפין הורס הקדוש-ברוך-הוא את סוריה. אף מדינה לא הצליחה לעשות שם שלום. כולם מרוקְנים על סוריה את התחמושת הישנה ועושים שם אימונים.
