A Dreamy Little Cottage By The Sea

Every now and again I come across a home which takes my breath away. This little cottage is one of them. Charmingly named Captains Rest, the secluded heritage cottage looks out over the water from it's vantage point in Lettes Bay, Tasmania.  Owner Sarah Andrews, an interior stylist, writer and sailor, describes it as "my pride and joy, my haven of peace and serenity." The cabin has been decorated with "love and delight" with objects and furnishings from around the world and is "brimming with curated collections, fine linens, cosy textures and objects of delight". Guests (yes, it's actually available to rent!) are invited to read in front of the fire, take long baths, walk in the forest, swim, fish, and dream. The question is, would you ever want to leave?!

One young man, whose parents thought him wicked and simple, turned out to be truly wise and changed the course of history.

Let me tell it to you by way of an incredible true story of one boy whose life was filled with tragic difficulties. As an infant, he was abandoned by his mother. At the age of seven his father sent him away to a boarding school where his teachers called him the worst student in his class by far. The reports his parents regularly received from the Dean of the school said, “Your son seems incapable of learning anything.”

As punishment for his “stupidity” he was frequently beaten by his teachers. When it came time for him to attend a high school, a task made all the more difficult by virtue of his extremely poor grades, his father wouldn’t give him permission to go to the school he himself chose because he was certain that his son would only embarrass him there. Thankfully he was accepted to a military school, but his father wrote to him of his great discontent and called him “an impudent little idiot”.

When the boy wrote to his father to share with him his progress, the answer came back with words that might be expected to destroy his self-confidence for the rest of his life: “You are a constant disappointment to me. Not only are you a complete failure in everything that you do, but I see nothing ahead for you but failure. Please do not write to me anymore. I do not wish to hear from you ever again.”

He is the only man who was ever nominated for two Nobel Prizes at the same time, one for literature and one for peace.

And who was this young man, the son whose own parents thought him wicked and simple and not knowledgeable enough even to ask a question?

He was Winston Churchill, featured in the movie “The Darkest Hour” as the hero and one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century – the man who rallied the people of England to fight a war against Nazi Germany and whose speeches electrified and inspired a nation to preserve Western civilization.
In addition to being a courageous leader and an extraordinary orator, Winston Churchill was also a talented painter and a great historian. Of his many achievements, he is the only man who was ever nominated for two Nobel Prizes at the same time, one for literature and one for peace.

Who could have predicted that this son with an abusive father, a disinterested mother, insulting teachers, and ego-destroying deans and principals would turn out to be the wise son of the Haggadah?
Perhaps the Haggadah is teaching us that not only that every one of our children deserves an honored place at the Seder table, but more significantly, that we never truly know the potential within every child. As we recite the names of each of the four children, we preface their identity with the same word in Hebrew: “Echad – one.” One is wise, one is wicked, one is simple, and one is unable even to ask – because the Haggadah is emphasizing that these four different character types may in fact characterize one and the same person at different times. These are all one child at different stages of his or her development.

None of us are all wise or all wicked, all simple or all insufficiently knowledgeable to ask the right questions. We are an amalgam of traits, a fascinating combination of types. By understanding the various selves of our own being, by acknowledging our multi-faceted nature, we can have more compassion for others. We can have greater empathy for our children as they go through phases, some of which try our patience and others which give us a totally false impression of our offspring’s’ failings without awareness of their unique abilities and talents.

The great blessing of life is change. People grow and develop. They mature and become transformed. And sometimes people don’t actually change; you just never knew who they really were in the first place.

The “four sons” can really be “echad” – one and the same child, a child who at times can drive us crazy with apparent faults, but other times proud beyond words because of achievements.
So that’s why on Passover night “the Torah speaks of four sons,” reminding us to love, even when the four character types are all joined into one person.

And most important of all, to make sure that all of our children, no matter which “son” we think they are at the time, are welcomed and share in the family togetherness of the Seder table.

Corn and Bacon Mini Crustless Quiches

Hello Dear Reader,

These little quiches came about as I wanted to take something quite portable to have as part of a picnic with my sister and her grandchildren on a days outing. Well, while I was making these cute little quiches my sister rang to say that her plans had changed and the outing wouldn't be going ahead.  Boo, I was so disappointed as I don't get to see my little family very often, we are all busy unfortunately.

These little quiches are quite delightful though and we had them for lunch the next day, I went with really soft flavours that would be child friendly but interesting enough for adult to love them too, I think I succeeded as they were polished off the very next day. You could easily double the recipe and freeze some for later and they are sturdy enough to carry for a school or work lunch as well.

Ingredients for Corn and Bacon Mini Crustless Quiches, clockwise from top right-
2 bacon rashers, sliced into small batons, 1/2 cup grated cheese plus extra for sprinkling over the top of mini quiches before baking, 1 spring onion, finely chopped, 3 tablespoons plain flour, 1 garlic clove, grated on a microplane, 4 large eggs, 2 tablespoons of cream (not pictured) and 140 gram creamed corn

Preheat oven to 175C. Sauté bacon until starting to crisp up, go golden and is cooked through, set aside to cool

In a large bowl, whisk 2 eggs until light and fluffy then add the flour and whisk again until lump free and smooth. Then add the other 2 eggs and whisk again until smooth and silky

Now add the creamed corn and the 2 tablespoons of cream

Again whisk until well combined

Add the cooled bacon

Spring onions and the grated cheese

Spoon into greased and lined muffin trays or use silicon muffin moulds like I did. I have had these silicon moulds for years and have used them countless times. Sprinkle a little of the reserved cheese over each mini quiche

Bake in a 175 C oven for 20 to 25 minutes until just golden and cooked through

There you go, a lovely, easy to carry lunch, suitable for the whole family. What do you make for a portable lunch that the whole family loves?

Doomsday Camps for DC Officials

According to the Washington Examiner, a building network of backwoods doomsday camps around the country are pulling in members from affluent areas and even Washington national security officials as the threats grow from nuclear war, an EMP (electromagnetic pulse), or virus attack. Dubbed Fortitude Ranch, the outposts promise protection and a year’s supply of food for those unable to build their own bunker with preparations for a SHTF scenario. What’s more, until a crisis strikes, the doomsday camps are being used for prepper training and vacations.

One of Fortitude Ranch’s members from the Baltimore area said that he and others joined after “waking up” to the potential of a national crisis from an attack, financial meltdown, or political violence. “For most of us, something rattled our cages and woke us up,” he said.

Inside the Parisien Home of a Chef / Photographer

Tjena! Hur är läget? I often think some of the most unique homes come about when two cultures collide, how about you? This is definitely the case with Carrie Solomon's lovely abode. Carrie moved from Michigan, USA to Paris over a decade ago and describes herself on instagram as a "breakfast cook, author, mother, and a photographer" (i.e. one busy, yet very creative lady!). Her lovely home is light and airy and filled with natural textures and cosy, one-off pieces set against a backdrop of white. Constance Gennari of The Socialite Family paid her a visit and snapped these images of Carrie's perfect oasis in the bustling 10th arrondissement: 

I get such a warm and inviting feeling from these pictures, how about you?! I especially love the light-filled sitting room which is separated from the bedroom with a glass partition.
