Future Plans For The Garden Part 1

Hello Dear Reader,

For a long time now, I have wanted an abundant garden, one which will bear a lot of fruit, veg and herbs. Up to this point in my life, I have gardened in pots, having no garden beds or good quality soil (except for one small one) I have had some success in gardening in pots but find it too restrictive and seem to get every pest and disease under the sun, which I believe is from the poor soil quality and lack of drainage.

So with this in mind, over Winter, we will be busy removing all 7 of the Golden Canes, removing the rock boarders and gravel "mulch" in the established garden beds, we will then be removing the existing timber fence and replacing it with a new fence consisting of half retaining wall, half colour bond fence. The retaining wall will be made of these concrete "sleepers" to keep a natural look. The garden beds will also be made out of these concrete sleepers to minimise upkeep and give the beds a longer life than if using timber sleepers.

We had a quote from a local Landscape Gardener for a retaining wall plus raised garden beds and automatic sprinklers, the quote came back at a staggering $22,000 Yes that is right, all those zeros! I just couldn't believe it. I know I'm out of touch, but that amount of money is just plain crazy. So with frugality in mind, we will be doing it ourselves, we have a friend who owns a fencing company, so he will give us a good price on the fence and we will be sourcing the concrete sleepers directly from the manufacturer to keep costs down. We will reuse as much of the rock and stone in the bottom of the new garden beds as drainage and we also want to make a long Gabion retaining wall along the back fence line incorporating the rock and a lovely full cut of slab timber we have had for ages, to cap it off, to use as seating.

I am so excited to have this project finally underway, my idea is to have 4 to 5 raised garden beds to do crop rotation, to lessen the chance of pests and disease in the garden. During the transition, it will be messy, time consuming and probably exhausting work but nothing good ever came easy. I will keep you up to date with the progress in the next few months.

Tell me, have you ever overhauled your garden? Did it turn out how you wanted?

Have a lovely day
