Starting the Year Out Right — Frugal Living

The lore I grew up hearing in the South (and perhaps this is the same in other areas, too) is that whatever you spend January 1st doing is indicative of how your year will go.  While we opted not to do the traditional Hoppin John this year, I did give my nod to this tradition notion.  Nothing beats starting off the year on the right foot — the frugal foot.

I pulled two Cornish hens from the freezer and rubbed them down with olive oil and Greek seasonings.  I roasted them in the air fryer oven that I got for Christmas.  (The little red air fryer went with my daughter to her new place — lots of changes here in the last few weeks and I’ll try to catch everyone up as soon as I can.). We invited my daughter over for lunch and the three of us ate well.  Then I pulled almost 1 1/2 cups of meat from the bones to go in either a soup or casserole.  When I had finished that I simmered the carcass and ended up with a quart of flavorful chicken broth.  (I had picked the bones pretty well and there was about 1/3 cup of chicken I pulled off after simmering that I just added to the jar of broth.).  Not too shabby for two tiny hens.

Happy New Year!

Just like this lazy kitty, I was snoozing when the New Year came in, but earlier in the evening I spent time with my husband and daughter celebrating.  For you night owls (and early birds like me) I hope you had a wonderful evening, and I wish you all the best for 2019!

Cementing Relations with Lebanon

Moment Hezbollah Terrorists Spot Cement Spilling Out Of Their Tunnel Into Israel

When Israeli cement flooded the Hezbollah tunnel

"These pictures of the flowing cement will speak for themselves and show the Lebanese government under which Hezbollah operates," the IDF Spokesman said, adding that the operation was proceeding according to plan.

It should be noted that although the IDF has given information on a number of tunnels to UNIFIL to deal with them, the UN peacekeeping force does not appear to have taken any action yet. The operation is not over yet and it will take time until we neutralize all the tunnels," the IDF Spokesperson said. arutzsheva

2019 Goals

I opted to change things up for 2019.  Rather than doing year long goals I am going to focus on monthly goals.  On the first of each month I will share three to four goals for the month.  Some may carryover into the following month.  I think this will be more relevant to my life as it is now. I hope you will join me in this new adventure.  Now on to January's goals....

1.  Set Up a Routine
After everything that happened with W's job last year, we basically took the rest of the year off.  We worked and did things, but we kept things from being too structured.  Now we both feel the need a set routine or at least as much as possible.  I need a morning and evening routine and a daily checklist for keeping the household under control.

2. Pantry/Freezer Challenge
Our pantry and freezers are out of control.  I want to spend as little as possible at the grocery store this month and eat from what we have on hand.  I do not have any set in stones rules for this.  My goal is to save as much of my January grocery budget as possible.

3.  Plan the Garden
I want to make better use of the garden area this year.  I say that every single year, but this is the year to put it into hard practice.  Rather than trying to pack as much into the space as possible, I am going with quality over quantity.  I plan to take my grocery savings to fund my garden which gives me extra incentive to save.

That should be more than enough to keep my busy during the month.  I will posts updates on my progress on Mondays.  Are you making goals for the month or year?  I would love to know what your plans are!

Sorry . . .

It was February 1946. The place, Neurenberg, Germany. To be more specific; a small jail cell not far from the famous courtroom where he had just stood trial for crimes against humanity.

Obersturmbahnfuher Otto Henke had just been sentenced to life in prison for his part in the murder of hundreds and probably thousands of Jews. He committed these acts because he firmly believed it was his national duty to do so. Henke was on his way up the ladder of Nazi leadership when the war ended and was caught by the allies.

Professor Henry Goldstein, a noted ( atheist, Jewish) author, and peace activist before the war belonged to a group of intellectuals that insisted upon always seeing the"other" side's point of view in every situation. It is simply impossible, he insisted, that one side can be totally right and the other totally wrong. That was far too simplistic and an approach that only prolonged conflict. History bore that out he explained.

He would not accept the notion that some people were irretrievable. The dialogue was always welcome with anyone who could be convinced to engage in it.

When professor Goldstein completed his latest book, "Two sides of the river", he was delighted to rush an autographed copy to Herr Henke. He wrote that he hoped that his book would bring the two together and that he looks forward to greeting him "on the outside”.

We do not know for sure what the reaction of the dedicated Nazi war criminal was to professor Goldstein's gift.

The above is fiction. The following is not.

In March 2011, Amos Oz sent imprisoned former Tanzim leader Marwan Barghouti a copy of his book A Tale of Love and Darkness in Arabic translation with his personal dedication in Hebrew: “This story is our story, I hope you read it and understand us as we understand you, hoping to see you outside and in peace, yours, Amos Oz” .

Marwan Barghouti(head of the "PLO/Tanzim" terror group) is serving multiple life sentences in an Israeli jail. He is responsible for the murder of great numbers of Jews and for planning to build on his successes. He, like our Herr Henke, is a leader of a movement that educates and incites to anti-Semitism and carries out continual murderous attacks against Jews. For him and his fellows, just as the Nazis before him, there is no greater enemy of his people and of mankind than the Jews.

He is a leader of the largest anti Jewish ideology group since Nazism and is responsible for the murder of more Jews than any other - since the Nazis.

So why did Amos Oz send the mass murderer and Jew hater his autographed book?
You may ask yourself this question as I do myself.

His approach is not an isolated phenomenon among intellectual Jews in Israel and abroad.
I still do not understand it.

I have not read any of Oz's books, though I have no doubt that they deserve the praise they have received.

I will not join the outpouring of praise for the celebrated Israeli author who just passed away, as I think of the smirk on the face of Barghouti as he leafs through the dear gift from his "enlightened' friend - the "useful idiot"

People like Amos Oz spent much time and energy explaining to the world how we Jews were not as right as you might think and that our enemies were not the villains you might have been told of.

Don't be too pro Israel.

He was the most powerful advocate of the above message. Am I sorry that our enemies will no longer enjoy the comfort of his embrace?

Should I be?
