Beautiful Bordeaux Day 3

Bonjour Dear Reader,



Today we went to Bergerac to visit a duck farm, what for? To taste Foie Gras. I have always wanted to try it and wanted an authentic experience, well you couldn’t get anymore authentic then this farm. The owners are a wonderful passionate couple who raise, despatch and then make the Foie Gras. They showed us the baby ducklings, the free range ducks in the fields then the area were the ducks for force fed for 2 days before being despatched. Yes, it was confronting to see herds of big ducks in timber pens, looking quite frightened, but I can’t be a hypocrite and eat a ducks liver without knowing how it came about. For most of the ducks short life they live an idealic existence, naturally grazing, free range. 









Our next stop was Bergerac, a lovely little old town about an hour from Libourne where our ship was moored. We had a guided tour through the town with the absolutely lovely and knowledgeable, Julia, our tour guide who originates from Champange but now lives in St Emilion, where we visited yesterday. The building are mostly stone and timber and look like they belong in a story book, so beautiful. We then had some spare time to look through the little town, unfortunately there wasn’t too much opened as it was another public holiday (ascension day). My sister bought some lovely local pottery from the potter himself and we both purchased a pack of Foie Gras products from the duck farm ( La Ferme de Biorne) earlier in the day. 


















Once back on board we headed off for lunch, this time in the Crystal Dining room as the River Cafe was closed by the time we got back on board. We had been eating quite light at lunch but those lighter options weren’t available today, but we thoroughly enjoyed Coq au Vin, Potato Dauphinois and buttered zucchini, followed by white chocolate crepes with pistachio and strawberry ice cream. Yes I will be coming back with extra luggage I feel!
