Decisions, Decisions...

Hello Dear Reader,

You have probably realised by now that I can flip and flop between ideas very quickly, what seems like a good idea one week will not resonate with me the next. In recent times I started to go to the supermarkets to see if I could snaffle any marked down produce to help stretch the food budget. I didn't feel too bad picking up marked down fruit and veg, but it was the meat I struggled with. Did that animal have a good life? Was it treated humanly? The answer is probably not, not if I am buying meat at a supermarket where the almighty dollar controls everything.

So, with that in mind I have decided (lets see how long it lasts) this year to only buy our meat from places where I know the animal has had a better life. Originally I thought we would start to buy our pork from Rhodavale Pork near Gympie, the story appeared on Landline a while ago and it is the story that planted the seed of the idea, of only eating ethically raised meat.

The only draw back is we would have to travel an hour or so up the coast to pick up the meat at a collection point. So, what's the alternative? Lovely Hubby is on FB and has been seeing lots of ad's and comments on a butcher over the bridge at Sandgate called "Jason's Quality Meats". He has quite the following with glowing reviews about the quality of the meat and the wonderful service he and his butchers provide. He specialises in humanly treated (RSPCA approved) and free range meats.

After dropping our Aunty off on Saturday afternoon we popped into Jason's Quality Meats, which is just a short drive from her home,  just to check it out. They were about to close and you could see that they had had a busy day with not much meat left in the display cases. Jason was welcoming and very happy to talk to us about his business and also introduced us to his son who was working along side his dad. You could see the pride and enthusiasm this man has for his business. It was quite infectious and we ended up buying a selection of his famous sausages, just to try.

I wish I had taken more notice of where the free range beef and lamb was sourced from, but I do know where the pork is sourced from. Gooralie Free Range Pork, from Goondiwindi, is antibiotic free, free range, hormone growth free, chemical residue free and endorsed by the RSPCA. You can read more about this family owned business here.

The RSPCA freedoms include-

Freedom from hunger and thirst
Freedom from discomfort
Freedom from pain, injury or disease
Freedom to express normal behaviour
Freedom from fear and distress

And isn't that what we should all want for animals that give their lives so we can choose to eat meat? I understand it is a luxury to have the option to choose free range and it is a totally personal choice.

This post is not sponsored and all opinions are my own.
All photos were obtained from the Jason's Quality Meat FB Page.

Have a lovely day,
💚Fi
