The Best Ham and Cheese Toasties

Hello Dear Reader,

I have wanted to try making these Croc Monsieur for such a long time and finally last week I got my chance. I had baked a ham, a small, boneless piece, last Tuesday in a Maple Syrup, Mustard and Brown Sugar glaze and had a few slices left over. Well, I hid those slices in a container in the veggie draw, from the boys, as anything not nailed down is fair game for lunches or snacks, especially if it involves meat.

It is really just a fancy cheese and ham toastie with a gorgeous cheese sauce over the top and grilled, it-was-heaven, I tell you.

Ingredients for Croc Monsieur, clockwise from top right-2 cups milk, warmed, 250 grams of ham slices (I cut mine into batons to go further), 40 grams of plain flour, 40 grams of butter, Dijon mustard, 2 cups of grated cheese of choice, 1 cup for the cheese sauce and 1 cup for the actual filling of the ham and cheese toasties. I used tasty as that is what we like, but traditionally you use Gruyere plus bread of choice

First make your cheese sauce in the usual way, set aside to cool slightly

Generously spread one side of the bread with Dijon mustard

Top with ham and cheese

Sandwich together and then dollop and spread the slightly cooled cheese sauce over the top, grill until starting to take on some colour

And serve immediately

This quantity made 5 rounds of Croc Monsieur, I made 2 more rounds a little later in the evening, when our son got home. Easy, delicious and a bit luxurious.

Do you need to "hide" or squirrel away food at your place? And have you made this gorgeous toastie before? What about Croc Madame?

Have a lovely day
