This Weeks 5 Frugal Things on a Friday

Hello Dear Reader,

I want to ask one question, why won't it rain? Every morning this week we have woken up to a cloudy morning, heavy with expectant rain and then, those dark clouds evaporate into clear skies that produce a super hot, sticky and humid day. I am so over it. It probably doesn't help that I have been riding to work everyday, I arrive at work in a swathe of perspiration, even though it's not that far to work, talk about a sweaty betty!

I remember the summers of my childhood, hot and sticky all day long, with the storm bird calling in the distance, then that heat was always broken by a thundery storm in the late afternoon where it would rain buckets, our weather pattern has changed so dramatically and I so miss this kind of summer.

Except for yesterdays recipe, which really is a cooler weather dish, we have been eating lighter meals like fish and salad and a prawn stir fry with loads of veggies. The hot weather certainly doesn't encourage time in the kitchen, I find.

Now on with the frugal stuff-

1. Cut a block of cheese in half and froze one half of it. I was finding the block was starting to go off by the time we were almost finished it. I have double wrapped it in foil to keep it dry in the freezer.

2. When cutting spring onions, I always keep about 1-2 cm of the white with the root attached so I can plant it and re-grow another spring onion.

I clean the white end up, trim the tangled roots off with a knife leaving about 1-2 cm of root and pop it straight into the soil. It works every time.

3. I made a huge (maybe a bit too huge) Thai style salad last Sunday, for the week ahead. To keep it super fresh and crunchy, I line a well sealed contained with a clean, lint free, tea towel. This salad is still fresh and crunchy, I have been taking this salad for my lunch everyday and have also had it with dinner a few times.

4. Cleaned the labels off some handy sized glass jars, I first soak the jars to soften the label, then, using a butter knife, I scrape as much of the label and adhesive off, followed by eucalyptus oil on a piece of paper towel. The jars then get a ride through the dish washer and they are set to go.

5. Cut and planted out some sprouted ginger, as with the spring onions above, it works every time.

5a. Made this giant white chocolate chip cookie to take to work for a surprise morning tea for a colleague, who has left our department. I had all the ingredients already at home, so there was no outlay of $$.

There you go, my 5 frugal things, over to you, how did you save money this week?

Have a lovely day,
💕Fi
