Hello Dear Reader,
We have had lots of rain which was is both a blessing and a curse. The rain came at exactly the right time, just when we had finished filling the raised garden beds. However I feel there has been a little too much, leaching the goodness from the soil.
We bought, what we thought, was quite good quality garden soil, but I feel there is too high a ratio of sand and it isn't able to hold any goodness in the soil. We are also sitting on a clay base and while we did everything we could to help with drainage, the exposed clay in front of the beds is a clag-y mess.
We planted out the lemon, lime tree and the big clump of comfrey and they are doing just okay. There is some yellowing and leaf fall, again I feel this is because of the quality of the soil. I did add my home made compost and pelletised chicken manure but I don't think it was enough.
We have decided to buy some bags of compost and dig it through the gardens that are still bare to see if this improves the structure and quality of the soil. I am feeling a little deflated at the moment as I imagined anything I planted would just take off. That hasn't been the case.
Gardening is hard work, at least for me, I am not very strong and it takes all my strength just to dig over the soil. So the plan is to buy one bag of good quality compost a week and dig it through a garden. As for the herb garden that is already planted out, I will give it a good feed with sea weed solution to see if that helps it along.
This week or next week, if the rain holds off, lovely hubby will start to lay down the rest of the pavers to finish off the edging next to the raised garden beds. We will then start on the gabion rock walls. I will be happy to see the end of exposed clag-y clay and a very messy yard.
To add insult to injury, during a very bad storm on Sunday afternoon, Pippa, one of our little but very strong Jack Russells, went a bit berserk and ended up in the garden, running up and down the garden beds like a mad dog, she has trampled the tiny herb and veggie seedlings, ruining a lot of them and disturbing my perfect rows. I am hoping she doesn't do it again, talk about heartbreaking.
How is your garden growing?
Have a lovely day,
