What's Happening in the Garden

Hello Dear Readers and Fellow Greenfingers,

Today I thought I would give you a little update of our garden adventures. Thanks to some advice from some of my lovely readers, Shangri La, Bilko Parker and Cheryl, I'm looking at you, we now have pumpkins. You have no idea how absolutely thrilled I am to, at last, have something growing well in the garden, I swear they double in size overnight. I played the part of a bee, hand pollinating the female flowers with a soft paint brush from the pollen of a male flower, as advised by those wise readers.

The other thing we have done is start to install an irrigation system in the raised garden beds. We chose little spray/drip taps which will sit under the mulch to keep the soil moist. We have found that watering from above, i.e. over the mulch, lets very little water in, the mulch gets wet but it doesn't seem to transfer to the soil.

There will be five rows of irrigation hoses with 3 "taps" on each one, in each garden bed, hopefully that will keep the intended 6 rows of crops nicely moist. Each row and tap can be adjusted to alter the water flow/pressure and even turned off if and when necessary.

For the moment we have bricks sitting on the black plastic irrigation tubes to make them sit straight instead of bowed, this along with the heat of the day should relax them straight. Once they have relaxed we will reposition them under the mulch.

I am so chuffed with this tiny but lovely step in the right direction of growing our own fruit and vegetables, it's a wonderful feeling. Simple things!

How is your garden growing?

Have a lovely day,
💚Fi
