Another, Less Plastic Waste, Toothpaste to Try

Hello Dear Reader,

I have been making our own toothpaste on and off for a few years, the two main issues that keeps me flipping back to buying toothpaste is the mess that the bentonite toothpaste makes in the sink (I know 1st world problem) and the fact that I felt I needed to brush my teeth twice, to get them really clean. The bentonite clay is very soft, almost like talcum powder, so of course it is going to be very gentle on the teeth, the other toothpowder that I used to make was based on Bicarbonate of Soda and always found it left my teeth and mouth feeling very clean.

So I went in search of a toothpaste based on Bicarb. I found one over at "Treading My Own Path" and you can read all about that story on her blog. So on Sunday I popped down to my local Pharmacy to purchase the required Glycerol and made up a half batch of the "Dentist Approved Toothpaste", just to try. The verdict?

I love it, the texture is more like a regular toothpaste, of course it is more salty because of the bicarb but it is balanced nicely by the natural sweetness of the glycerol and my teeth and whole mouth felt really clean, which was so lovely. The clincher for me was the following morning my teeth still felt quite clean and not furry which I had been experiencing with the bentonite based toothpaste.

Why on earth would I make my own toothpaste? I want to reduce the amount of plastic waste that we generate and most toothpaste, even the more natural ones, come in a plastic tube. There are some available in a glass jar but the cost is prohibitive, so I'll keep trying different plastic free varieties until I find one that suits us.

Ingredients for Bicarb Soda Toothpaste, from left 4 tablespoons Bicarbonate of Soda, 3 tablespoons Glycerol and 8 drops of Peppermint oil

Method

Mix all ingredients together in a ceramic bowl till smooth, decant into a glass jar with a lid.
Use this sparingly, much less than normal toothpaste, I would say I use less than a 1/4 of a teaspoon.

As always this idea may not be for you, it is just something that I feel strongly enough about to try.

The essential oils I use are from doTerra and are such high quality and I trust that they are safe for ingestion. Please only use essential oils that you trust.

Your turn, is making your own toothpaste something that you do or would consider doing?

Have a lovely day,
😁Fi
