The Saturday before last we went over the bridge to Brighton to our, new to us, free range butcher to see what he stocks and to buy some meat. One my list was sausages, chicken thigh fillets and bacon, we bought some containers and popped the esky in the car to keep the meat cold while bringing it home. Lovely Hubby also wanted a big joint of meat to slow roast in the BBQ and some steak to also BBQ.
We arrived at about 9.30am and the display cases were both full, lovely hubby was like a kid in a lolly shop, wanting one of everything, in the end this is what we bought-
From left-Pork Ribs to marinade and to slowly roast in the BBQ, the butcher kindly took the skin off so we can roast the crackling separately
24 x really beautiful quality sausages-they have won many awards for their sausages
3 pieces of Rib Fillet
500 grams of smokey bacon
600 grams of chicken thigh fillets (not pictured)
And a glass bottle of 4Real Milk
TOTAL-$180.00-I know, I almost choked!
The sausages have been portioned into 4 lots of 6 sausages (there is always one or two left over for lunch the next day)
The bacon was portioned into 2 x 250 gram lots
The Rib fillet was portioned into 2 lots (I will only eat half a piece of steak)
The chicken thigh fillets were used in Apricot Chicken Risotto which did us for 2 dinners
The Pork Ribs will be used for a family dinner, but I'm sure there will be leftovers so I'm saying it will be good for at least 2 dinners
And the milk was turned into vanilla yoghurt for our breakfasts
So, I'm thinking we will get about 12 dinners out of this meat which works out to be about $15 per dinner or $7.50 each. Of course we will stretch out this meat with fish, prawns and veggie and pulse based dinners so if we have 2 meat based meals a week this should in theory last us about 6 weeks. Here's hoping anyway.
Now we have an idea of what our butcher stocks, how much the meat costs and roughly how long it will last us, I'm feeling a bit better about how much we spent in one go. It is beautiful quality, it is free range and in a lot of cases also organic. Next time we go there, I'm looking forward to buying some of the cheaper cuts to slow cook over the cooler months and some good quality mince to be a bit kinder to our grocery budget.
What do you like to buy from your local Butcher?
Have a lovely day,
