What's Happening or Not Happening in the Garden

I just wanted to do a little post about our garden adventures, well, misadventures more like it! Once the huge job of building the raised garden beds was done, lovely hubby then set about filling them with garden soil. He bought, what he thought was a good quality soil from a local landscape supplier, unfortunately it was nothing but coloured sand. Very poor quality with no goodness in it, I should have realised it was mostly sand as when we were spreading it out I would find pockets of pure white sand.

I should have also realised that nothing was going to grow in this poor medium, but I went ahead and planted out the seedling I had raised from seed. Well, you can imagine what they seedling did, they just sat there for a few days until they died from lack of nutrition, I kept watering them to see if that would help, but to no avail.

So we've gone back to the drawing board, we bought bags of Richgro compost and dug that through each garden bed, we also used a new kind of fertiliser that was recommend by a lovely client of hubby's who owns the local garden centre. It is called Troforte and is like the ultimate fertiliser and pro-biotic for your soil. We have anointed each garden with the recommended dose as well as applying it around the established lemon and lime trees.

We also had to replace the plastic garden edging with a more rigid wire mesh panel to stop the dogs from getting in the garden beds, the plastic ones were too flimsy and they were able just to hop over them. For little dogs they sure can jump!
