Guess what? The garden transformation is just about done. Lovely Hubby has done a fantastic job and I just can't wait to start planning and planting out our new raised garden beds. I have saved so many youtube programs to my iPad, about 4 bed crop rotation and have been watching them non stop. And of course I have been watching Gardening Australia as well, it is the highlight of my week. I have so many ideas, I can't wait till it all comes to fruition.
We have bought some gabion baskets at a great price from a local landscaping supplier, they were 20% off for the month of September. We have a lot of rock to use up that was originally the garden edging, we also have a lot of rock from next door that our son doesn't want, so I am sure we will have enough rock to fill the gabion baskets, which will act as retaining walls and a long bench at the back of the garden as well.
Even though I am super excited to start planting out, I am going to just take my time and really plan it well. I have made so many garden mistakes over the years, this time I want to get it right. The first plants going in will be our long suffering citrus, a lemon and lime, which have been in pots all their lives and are not the healthiest specimens. The lime especially, which sits in the back "veggie" garden is full of gall wasp, citrus curl and is just plain neglected. It will get a good cut back and dose of home made white oil.
Over the years I have saved heaps of seeds that I will use up first, I have basil, red lantern chilli, jalapeño, bellini tomatoes, parsley, coriander, jap pumpkin, mustard green, bok choy, rosella, sugar snap peas and sage. As well as bought seed such as, carrot, kale, broccoli, fennel and NZ spinach. That should be enough to get me started and I want to stick to the mantra of only growing what we eat.
The finished garden beds
Lovely hubby finished the raised garden beds on Monday afternoon and we were rewarded with some rain every night since then, perfect timing. The rain will settle the soil and of course add some moisture to the soil as well. We have bought bales of sugar cane mulch and as we plant out will be adding a really thick layer of mulch to reduce moisture loss and deter weeds. Stay tuned in the coming weeks to see our progress.
Have a lovely day,
💕Fi
