Making the New Dog Coats

Hello Dear Reader,

Little Pippa has worn this old coat through many winters, it was very well made, such a simple but clever design, just like a horse blanket. In fact it was so well made that it originally belonged to her father, old Mr Chips. It was showing its age, so I decided to take a pattern off of it and make two new ones for the little woofs.

I had already replaced the belly strap on this old coat at the beginning of Winter, it had definitely seen better days. It doesn't help that the coat was in need of a good wash at the time this photo was taken, it actually looked half decent when it was clean!

I bought some very large pyjama pants from a local op shop for a couple of dollars each, there is loads of fabric in them and both were made of very soft and warm material.

Firstly, I took a pattern off the old coat, I also measured the length of the belly and chest straps.

I then folded the fabric in half and pinned the pattern to it

Then I cut two pieces, one for the outer layer

And one for the inner layer

And pinned those two layers together

Ninja helped out by making sure those pinned together layers didn't move

I then quilted the layers together, a bit wonky but I don't think the dogs will care or that anyone will notice

I then made the binding using this tutorial. It is the one I always refer to when binding a quilt

The binding pinned on ready to sew. After the binding was added I made a matching belly and chest strap, attached velcro and sewed them on to the coats

And voila, one for Pippa

And one for Lulu

I already had the fabric for the binding and the velcro in my stash so there was no more outlay of money except for the few dollars the old pyjama pants cost me. And as Ninja loves this material so much I will make her a little rug out of the remaining fabric, just because, I love her too.

It was a simple project, I just procrastinated like a champion all Winter long, never mind better late than never. The little woofs have been wearing their new coats of an evening and I take them off in the morning at about 8. It won't be long though until it is so warm at night that they won't need them. I love this pattern as it is so easy to put on and take off the dogs, velcro is the best!

What have you made from thrifted fabric? Any quilters reading?

Have a lovely day,
💗Fi
