Hello Dear Reader,
Yesterday we removed the last of the pumpkin vines, we harvested 5 lovely pumpkins, one that topped the scales at 7.5kg. We will leave them to cure and hopefully we can eat homegrown pumpkin all through autumn and maybe even into winter.
There was still baby pumpkins forming and bees doing their thing, pollinating, but it was time the pumpkin vines were removed to make way for our first proper growing season.
We will then set about improving the soil with some more compost, ready for the, better late than never, Autumn planting. I know we are a little late but I really wanted to let the pumpkins ripen on the vine for as long as I could. I plan to plant out seedings for the following as I don't have the time to raise them from seed.
Asian Greens
Beans
Beetroot
Carrot
Coriander
Dill
Lettuce
Leeks
Parsley
Oregano
Snow Peas
Rocket
Silverbeet
I will continue to sow rows of Mustard green seeds to fumigate the soil, as when I removed the first pumpkin vine in the lemon and lime tree bed, it had nematodes on the root, thankfully we didn't find nematodes on the rest of the spent pumpkin vines!
The sweet potato vine, in the little veggie garden out the back, has gone a bit bonkers so I'm hoping there are tubers growing underground. And I will be planting out the vegepod as well, mainly with herbs. ( I will update with a photo of the sweet potato bed later this morning, when the sun is up)
The Lemon tree had a good season
But the Lime tree only has one fruit on it, hopefully next season will be better
The ginger struggled under the canopy of the pumpkin vine, hopefully now it can get a wriggle on
And there are lots of fruit on the potted pomegranate
What are you growing in your garden at the moment?
Have a lovely day,
💚Fi
