Doing it Better

Hello Dear Reader,

I started using less single use plastic a few years ago now and of course I blogged about it, you can read about the slow changes that took place under the label "This Months Plastic Replacement". I made quite a few mistakes but through trial and error have found more environmentally friendly systems that work well for us.

Some things that have worked well and do all the time are-

-We buy our bamboo toothbrushes in bulk from here, 12 at a time, it is the best value place I have found and there is no plastic used to package and transport them either.

-We use unpackaged shampoo, skin care and body soap from Lush and again they don't use plastic in their packaging, simply wrapping the item in paper. However I often just bring in a little cloth bag for the items to go in, they don't mind.

- I have started to buy in bulk, bringing my own containers, from Simply Good which is about a 1/2 hour drive from where we live.

- I have used beeswax wraps and re-usable containers to pack lunch in for a very long time now, that it's just the way I do it now

-I buy loose tea from the Jetty Markets, bringing my own jars for them to fill. We do the same thing with bulk honey. The Honey Man is right next door to the Tea and Spice Market.

- I make flat bread and our daily bread in my Thermomix instead of buying it from the supermarket in plastic wrap

And these are some things that I would like to try in the future or have just started doing again-

-Buy bulk laundry liquid and dish washing liquid from Simply Good

-Try to source some silk at an op-shop to use as dental floss (this is an idea from Bea Johnson)

-Get back to making our own toothpaste with the addition of xylitol, which I have finally found at Simply Good. When I ran out of a few of the essential oils that I add to the toothpaste, I kind of lost interest in making our own toothpaste. I now have finally stocked up on the oils I need from here, now I just need to buy the xylitol and I'm good to go

-Make yoghurt, it really is very simple, again I just got out of the habit. A couple of weeks ago the Northside Discount Fruit Barn had Pauls Organic Milk on a super special, I bought 2 x 1 litre's and froze them. This past weekend I de-frosted one carton and made a Vanilla Yoghurt with it.

These are small, sustainable steps which are working well for me. What small changes have you made, that you feel are making a difference to the environment and to your health?

Have a lovely day,
 💚Fi
